Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – There is no one sure key to success. Even so, experts found that parents’ parenting styles contribute to their children’s success.
Author and parenting expert from the United States (US) Margot Machol Bisnow has conducted interviews with 70 parents of successful children to find out their parenting styles. The results of the interview were outlined in the book “Raising an Entrepreneur.”
Bisnow suggests there are five main characteristics that contribute to their children’s future achievements. Here are five traits that can indicate that children will be successful in the future, as quoted from CNBC International:
1. Have High Interest
Children who have a high interest in exploring many things can also be a sign of children who will be successful. Therefore, Bisnow urges parents to trust their children when they want to make their own choices.
In this way, children will learn to believe in their own abilities so that they can learn to become successful figures.
One example of a successful child who has high interests and desires is Robert Stephens. As a child, Stephens liked to fix things. At that time, his parents consistently supported Stephens’ passions and choices.
Now, Stephens already has a repair company worth US$ 3 million or around Rp. 45.4 billion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 15,153/US$) at the age of 24.
2. Not afraid to fail
Not being afraid to fail is important in building your little one’s character.
Mrs. Dhani Jones, founder of Qey Capital, said that as an entrepreneur, her son always dared to take risks by risking everything to achieve his dreams.
“A lot of people are afraid to let go of what they’ve achieved,” Dhani Jones’ mother told Bisnow.
“But if their parents instill enough self-confidence in them, they can live life without fear.”
3. Be persistent
Children who have a persistent nature usually don’t give up easily when facing challenges until they find a solution or learn a new lesson. Apart from that, they also have a big heart.
One example of a successful child who has a persistent nature is Jonathan Neman. Neman said that he had started a number of businesses since he was a teenager, but none of them were successful.
“We keep trying. We fail, we try again. We fail, we still try again. I’m not smarter than anyone else, but I’m just more persistent,” Neman explained to Bisnow.
Now, Neman and two colleagues founded Sweetgreen, an environmentally friendly salad business that has more than 900 branches.
4. Dare to start and take risks
Founder of the fashion brand Aviator Nation, Paige Mycoskie, said that at the age of 20, her grandparents gave her US$100 or around Rp. 1.5 million each as a birthday gift.
After being given the money, he decided to use the money as a means to achieve his dream, namely starting a clothing company by buying a sewing machine.
Not only did he buy a sewing machine, Mycoskie also decided to quit his job and start designing. In 2021, his nature to dare to start is not in vain. His company was successful in generating sales of US$ 110 million or around Rp. 1.6 trillion.
5. Have High Curiosity
Tania Yuki, founder and CEO of Shareablee, revealed that when she was four years old, her father always allowed her to develop courage and the desire to try new things. For example, Tania told a story about herself touching almost everything in a luxury gift shop despite a no-touching order.
At that time, Tania felt like she was in trouble when an officer took something from her hand. However, this didn’t last long after her father said, “She (Tania) just wants to know. If she breaks something, I will pay for it.”
“This kind of curiosity is a common characteristic of people who continue to create their own paths in life,” Bisnow said.
