84 Election Officials Died and 4,567 Sick, Here Are the Details

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Five days after voting day for the 2024 General Election (Pemilu), the General Election Commission (KPU RI), the General Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu), and the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) revealed that as many as 84 members of the 2024 Election Ad Hoc Body had died and 4,567 sick, Monday (19/2/2024).

Chairman of the Indonesian KPU, Hasyim Asy’ari, said that based on records from 14-18 February 2024, there were 71 members of the 2024 Election Ad Hoc Body consisting of members of the District Election Committee (PPK), Voting Committee (PPS), Voting Organizing Group (KPPS), and Community Protection (Linmas) died.

“There are 71 people who died, with details of one PPK member at the sub-district level, then four PPS members at the village/sub-district level, then 42 KPPS members at the PS level,” said Hasyim in a press conference at the Indonesian Ministry of Health office in Jakarta, Monday. (19/2/2024).


“Then Linmas, who was guarding the security of vote counting activities at the TPS, 24 people died,” he continued.

Apart from that, Hasyim also revealed that 4,567 people were declared sick, with details of 136 PPK members, 696 PPS members, 3,371 KPPS members and 364 Linmas members.

Meanwhile, member of Bawaslu RI, Herwyn Malonda, revealed that as many as 13 supervisors of the 2024 Election died during the 2024 Election.

Thus, the total number of members of the 2024 Election Ad Hoc Body who died as of the latest data is 84 people. In this regard, the Minister of Health (Menkes RI), Budi Gunadi Sadikin, said that this number had decreased drastically when compared to the 2019 Election.

“So there has indeed been a very drastic reduction in the number of election officials who died while on duty compared to the previous election (2019),” explained Budi on the same occasion.

“But we in the government, especially at the Ministry of Health, see that just one life lost is too many for us,” he added.

According to the Minister of Health, the screening results of 2024 election officials show that as many as 400 thousand people are at high risk. However, the screening carried out after KPPS registration means that their membership cannot be cancelled.

“Screening has been carried out on 6.8 million officers. Of the 6.8 million, 6.4 million are healthy, 400 thousand are at high risk. Well, many of these still pass,” said Budi.

“The highest risk is hypertension, then the second is heart disease. Those two are the biggest,” he added.

CNBC Indonesia has attempted to confirm further the causes of the members of the 2024 Election Ad Hoc Body to the KPU. However, Hasyim was reluctant to provide an answer.

Nevertheless, Hasyim emphasized that members of the Ad Hoc Agency who suffer permanent disabilities, injuries or even die will receive compensation. As of February 17 2024, four victims who died had received compensation.

“Currently, as of February 17, compensation has been distributed to four members of the Ad Hoc Agency who died,” said Hasyim.

The following is the amount of compensation given to members of the Ad Hoc Body as regulated in the Letter of the Minister of Finance S-647/MK.02/2022 through Other Input Cost Units (SBML) for General Election Stages and Election Stages.

  1. Compensation for those who die: IDR 36 million

  2. Assistance for funeral costs: IDR 10 million

  3. Compensation for those with permanent disabilities: IDR 30.8 million

  4. Compensation for those seriously injured: IDR 16.5 million

  5. Compensation for those with moderate injuries: IDR 8.25 million
