Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Anies Baswedan criticized the rush of investment into the mining sector in Indonesia. According to the presidential candidate from the coalition for change, investment and development in the mining sector has not been able to increase employment.
Indonesia’s economic growth, according to Anies, is not equivalent to the jobs created. He highlighted the very high level of investment in the mining sector.
According to him, the flow of capital into the mining sector is not enjoyed by many people. The proof is that the mining sector only absorbs 1 percent of the workforce.
On the other hand, there is a decline in investment in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors which absorb 44 percent of Indonesia’s workforce.
“Mining absorbs 1 percent, investment increases. This must change. We must encourage the sector that absorbs labor to experience an increase,” said Anies at the INDEF 100 Economist Workshop event which was held jointly with CNBC Indonesia on Wednesday (8/11/2023).
Anies stated that Indonesia’s economic ideas must lead to prosperity.
“We have succeeded in increasing growth above 6 percent, but this has not resulted in equal employment opportunities,” he said. “The public is a spectator, not enjoying the magnitude of economic growth.”
