Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) confirmed three cases of monkey pox or monkeypox in Indonesia. Three The findings of this case immediately became the spotlight. Because, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkey pox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) or a public health emergency in 2022.
However, rare zoonotic diseases are caused by viral infections monkeypox This is said to not easily infect humans born before 1980. What is the explanation?
In 2022, the Minister of Health (Menkes RI), Budi Gunadi Sadikin, stated that people born before 1980 had the opportunity to have higher protection against the transmission of monkey pox when compared to those born after 1980.
Budi said that people born before 1980 generally had received smallpox vaccination which was valid for life. In this way, the body becomes more immune to the threat of smallpox, including monkey pox.
“So, for friends who were born in 1980 and below, like me, who are old, it is protected [dari cacar monyet]. “Maybe not 100 percent, but protected,” said Budi, quoted Friday (20/10/2023).
The Minister of Health said that the conditions in Indonesia and several Asian countries were different from countries in Europe. In a number of Asian countries, generally the vaccines given to the public are valid for life.
Meanwhile in European countries, the vaccination process is not carried out thoroughly because chickenpox quickly disappears.
“For friends, like me, if you look at their arms there are scratches, for me they are still there. The difference with the Covid-19 vaccination which is valid for six months, this (smallpox vaccine) once vaccinated is valid for life,” explained Budi.
Thus, Budi predicts that monkey pox patients in Indonesia will not experience severe symptoms that can cause fatal conditions. This also raises the suspicion that the prevalence of monkey pox in Asia is not as severe as in Europe or other regions.
