Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI) confirmed that ahead of the Christmas and New Year 2024 (Nataru) holidays, the number of Covid-19 cases in several countries, including Indonesia, has increased.

Director General (Dirjen) of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, revealed that the Covid-19 trend in Indonesia tends to increase every week.

“In our country, it has been observed that this month there is an upward trend, from week to week,” said Dr. Maxi in an online press conference, Wednesday (6/12/2023).

“The average confirmed cases per day is 40, perhaps 35 to 40 per day,” he continued.

According to Dr. Maxi, this data was obtained from examining SARS-CoV-2 virus infections of around 1,000 to 1,100 people per day. The variant that still dominates is the Omicron subvariant XBB 1.5.

“Omicron subvariant XBB 1.5 still dominates Covid-19 cases in Indonesia,” said Dr. Maxi

Currently, around 131 people are being treated in hospital due to Covid-19 infection. However, the average number of cases is still relatively low and still below level one,

In connection with this increase in cases, the Indonesian Ministry of Health again appealed to the public to implement health protocols, such as using masks and carrying out vaccinations.

“Don’t forget to wear a mask, wash your hands with soap, and most importantly a booster. The vaccine itself is still free until the end of this year,” stressed Dr. Maxi.

“Next year, the Covid-19 vaccine will only be free for certain groups, such as the elderly and young adults with comorbidities or low immunity,” he added.
