Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – When Threads was launched last July, many users complained about its synchronization with Instagram. The reason is, users don’t have the option to delete their Threads account, because they have to close their Instagram account.

Now, Meta as the parent of the two platforms is launching a new feature that allows users to delete their Threads account without affecting their Instagram account.

This feature is embedded in the settings menu. There is a ‘Delete or Deactive Profile’ option, according to Instagram boss Adam Mosseri. Currently this feature is still being rolled out in stages, so not all users can try it.

Previously, users created Threads accounts directly from their Instagram accounts. The transition from Threads to Instagram and vice versa is made seamless.

Consequently, there is no other way to delete Threads other than closing the Instagram account. This mechanism was protested and considered to be a cunning strategy by Instagram to boost the growth of Threads users.

At first the tactic worked. Threads broke the record as the world’s fastest growing service, beating ChatGPT. In 5 days, active users reached 100 million.

In fact, Threads made netizens switch from X (formerly Twitter). The two services are like twins, with a format that prioritizes the text aspect.

However, now active Threads users are dwindling due to the lack of features that are a mainstay in X. For example, trending topics and DMs.
