Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Coffee and tea are favorite drinks for most people, especially to start the day. It turns out that the habit of drinking coffee or tea in the morning can reduce the risk of dementia or memory loss and stroke.
Reporting from CNN International, scientists from Tianjin Medical University in Tianjin, China studied more than 360 thousand people for 10 to 14 years regarding the impact of consuming tea or coffee on the risk of dementia and stroke.
Meanwhile, data on research subjects was obtained from an anonymous health information database of around half a million volunteers in the UK, UK Biobank, which was collected from 2006 to 2020.
Through this data, this study looked at the health of research subjects aged between 50 and 74 years. The subjects also admitted that they consumed coffee and tea.
During the study period, published in PLOS Medicine, 5,079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 experienced stroke.
As a result, people who consumed two to three cups of coffee, three to five cups of tea, or a combination of four to six cups of coffee or tea a day had a lower risk of stroke and dementia.
“Our findings show that moderate consumption of coffee and tea separately or in combination is associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia,” said the study researchers, quoted Thursday (9/11/2023).
In detail, people who drink two to three cups of coffee and two to three cups of tea for a total of four to six cups have a 28 percent lower risk of dementia and a 32 percent lower risk of stroke than people who drink neither.
“In this study, people who reported drinking moderate amounts of coffee or tea were less likely to have a stroke or dementia within 10 years,” the researchers said.
Meanwhile, another study in 2021 also showed that people who were not diagnosed with heart disease actually consumed coffee regularly, namely 0.5 to three coffees a day. In fact, this amount is associated with a reduced risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and any premature death.
