According to the official website of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes RI), a hernia is a disease characterized by organs or tissues in the body protruding due to weakness of the muscles or supporting tissue in the body.

This disease, which more often affects men, consists of several types and can be seen at the point of appearance, namely inguinal hernia which is characterized by a lump in the groin, umbilical hernia around the navel, femoral hernia in the inner thigh, incisional hernia in surgical wounds, and epigastric hernias in the upper abdominal wall.

Quoting from Healthline, hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and tension. Usually, hernias can develop quickly or over a long period of time depending on the cause.

Furthermore, there are several common causes of muscle weakness or tension that trigger hernias, such as congenital conditions that occur during development in the womb and are present from birth, aging, damage due to injury or surgery, strenuous exercise, chronic cough or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders, constipation, to obesity.

Usually, the hernia lump can “disappear” when the sufferer’s body is lying down. On the other hand, a hernia lump can be felt when standing, bending, lifting weights, straining when urinating (BAK) and defecating (BAB) or even coughing. In some cases, a hernia lump can cause pain.

“In the majority of cases, hernias do not show symptoms. Usually, this disease can be detected when the hernia appears or when you have a medical examination or routine physical examination,” wrote Healthlinequoted Monday (1/4/2024).

If a hernia is found, the patient needs to undergo surgery to close and strengthen the lower abdominal wall. Therefore, immediately consult a doctor if you find a lump, especially in the area around the stomach.
