International 11 Israel-Gaza War Update, New Data on North Korean Weapons-Casualties News – 7 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Attacks continue to occur in Gaza. The attack was launched by Israel in revenge for the attack by the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, on its territory on October 7.

The following are the dynamics of the Israel-Hamas war as collected by CNBC Indonesia from various sources, Tuesday (17/10/2023):

Death toll reaches 4,265

The death toll from the war between Hama and Israel has now reached 4,265 people. From the latest data, quoted by Al-Jazeera, victims continue to increase in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel.

In Gaza, 2,808 residents were killed with 10,859 injured. Meanwhile in the West Bank, there were 57 dead and 1,200 injured.

In Israel it was reported that 1,400 were killed. Meanwhile, the number of injured reached 3,500 people.

War Spreads to Lebanon

Israel is also said to have attacked Lebanon. This was confirmed by Foreign Minister Bou Habib, citing Al-Jazeera.

He said Israel must stop its provocations. Tel Aviv is tantamount to spreading oil on burning coals, and could spread war.

“We are not pro-war,” he said.

“We want calm in the area,” he added.

Biden Visits Israel

United States (US) President Joe Biden will pay a visit to Israel on Wednesday. This was stated by the White House and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“The president will reaffirm US solidarity with Israel and our strong commitment to its security,” Blinken said in Tel Aviv.

“Israel has the right and obligation to defend its people from Hamas and other terrorists and prevent future attacks,” he said, as reported by AFP.

“Biden will hear from Israel what it needs to defend its people as we continue to work with Congress to meet those needs,” he said.

US Prepares 2,000 Troops

About 2,000 US troops have been ordered to prepare to deploy to the Middle East to provide support to Israel. This news was conveyed by a state defense official.

“The troops have not (actually) been sent anywhere, nor will they necessarily be sent to Israel or Gaza. If they are deployed, they will go to nearby countries to prepare to support Israel in the war against Hamas,” said the official, as quoted by NBC News.

Furthermore, the troops who received the order were already in a 96-hour deployment preparation status. In fact, he added, readiness had been shortened to 24 hours.

Those deployed will include military members with a wide range of abilities and specialties. This includes providing medical support and handling explosives.

Japan “Hands Down”

Israel continues to intensify its attacks on the Gaza region, Palestine. This follows an attack by the region’s rulers, Hamas, on the southern Israeli area on October 7.

Israel’s attacks were carried out indiscriminately. Many locations were targeted by Tel Aviv, triggering thousands of civilian deaths.

Israel also blocked utility and logistics access to the region, triggering shortages of basic goods and weakening the health sector due to shortages of medicine and electricity.

For this reason, Japan decided to participate in helping the people of Gaza. Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa announced that Tokyo would provide up to US$ 10 million (Rp. 157 billion) to Gaza.

“Japan hopes that the situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories will calm down as soon as possible,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The War “Spreads” into Europe

The war between Hamas and Israel “spread” to a number of countries. After violence occurred in France and the United States (US), this time the impact of the war occurred in Germany.

This is related to the Frankfurt Book Fair in that country. The biggest publishing event in the world was “boycotted” by a number of countries.

Even though it will start Wednesday, more than a week since Hamas launched an attack on Israel that resulted in Tel Aviv’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip, the committee condemned the attack. In fact, he promised to highlight the voice of “Israel”.

“Standing in full solidarity with Israel,” said Director Juergen Boos in a statement, quoted by AFP.

This was followed by the postponement of the award ceremony for Palestinian writer, Adania Shibli. This sparked condemnation from leading writers and the withdrawal of several Arab groups.

“Delaying the award would be tantamount to closing the space for the Palestinian voice,” said the open letter signed by Abdulrazak Gurnah and Olga Tokarczuk, both winners of the Nobel Prize for World Literature.

“The Frankfurt Book Fair has a responsibility, as a major international book fair, to create a space for Palestinian writers to share their thoughts, feelings, reflections on literature through these terrible and cruel times, not shut it down,” he added.

Iran Warns Israel

Iran warned of possible “precautionary measures” against Israel “in the coming hours”. This is when Israel prepares to carry out a ground attack on the Gaza Strip.

Tehran has repeatedly warned that a land invasion of long-blockaded Gaza would be met by other parties. This has raised concerns about a wider conflict that could involve other countries.

“Possible countermeasures by the resistance axis are expected in the coming hours,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in a live broadcast on state TV, referring to his meeting with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Saturday.

Jordan Warns about Gaza Refugees

King Abdullah II of Jordan warned that the movement of Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt was a “red line”. He said there would be no refugees in Jordan and no refugees in Egypt.

Speaking alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at a press conference in Berlin, the King warned all forms of forced migration. He expressed deep concern over the heavy casualties on the Palestinian and Israeli sides and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, which he described as “unacceptable,” both from a legal and humanitarian perspective.

“That is a red line, because I think it is a plan by certain suspects to try to create a de facto problem on the ground. There are no refugees in Jordan, there are no refugees in Egypt. This is a situation with a humanitarian dimension that must be addressed in Gaza and the West Bank and not try and force the future challenges of Palestine onto other people’s shoulders,” said King Abdullah II.

“This year has been the bloodiest for Palestinians and Israelis in recent years, and it will get worse unless we stop this war and the humanitarian disaster it has caused,” he added.

The UN also becomes a victim of the Israeli attack

At least 17 staff members of the UN aid agency in Gaza (UNRWA) have been killed in Israeli airstrikes since October 7, the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

UNRWA said Israeli airstrikes continued in Khan Younis and other southern areas of the enclave.

“An estimated 1 million people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip, and nearly 400,000 people have sought refuge in UNRWA facilities,” the agency said.

Despite the IDF’s evacuation order, an unknown number of internally displaced persons remain in UNRWA schools in the north, the agency said, adding that it could no longer help or protect people in the region.

Russian Resolution on Gaza Rejected

The United Nations Security Council on Monday rejected a Russian resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas because the draft did not get the minimum number of votes needed to pass.

The resolution received five votes in favor, four against and six abstentions, with the United States, Britain and France voting against due to the resolution’s failure to condemn Hamas for its attacks on Israel. The draft requires nine votes to proceed.

“By failing to condemn Hamas, Russia is providing cover to a terrorist group that commits brutal acts against innocent civilians. This is outrageous, hypocritical, and indefensible,” said US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in justifying the US decision.

He previously compared attacks carried out by Hamas to “the most heinous atrocities committed by ISIS.”

North Korean Weapons Used by Hamas

North Korea (North Korea) is said to have provided armed support to Palestinian fighters, Hamas, in its action to attack Israel. This was conveyed by the former Israeli Ambassador to South Korea (South Korea), Akiva Tor, to Voice of America (VOA).

Tor said that these weapons had been in Iran for a long time. It is known that Pyongyang has voiced strong support for Palestine.

“We will destroy these weapons in Gaza,” Tor added.

Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, photos of F-7 rocket-propelled grenades claimed to be made by North Korea have also appeared on X’s social media.

Bruce Bechtol, a former intelligence officer at the US Defense Intelligence Agency who is now a political science professor at Angelo University in Texas, told VOA Korean via email that the F-7 in a photo was a Pyongyang-made aircraft.

“It appears that a large number of the weapons used by Hamas came from North Korea,” he added.

Bechtol continued that more North Korean weapons would likely be found in Gaza after the Israel Defense Forces began a ground offensive in the territory.

Meanwhile, in a statement on North Korea’s official news agency, KCNA, Pyongyang emphasized that the information was false. According to Pyongyang, the report is the US’s way of looking for a new scapegoat for the conflict in Gaza.

“This is simply an attempt to shift the blame for the Middle East crisis caused by wrong hegemonic policies to a third country and thus avoid international criticism that focuses on evil empires,” the country was quoted as saying by AFP.
