Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Google Indonesia has opened its voice regarding the issue of YouTube expanding into e-commerce business in Indonesia.
Google Indonesia Managing Director Randy Jusuf said that until now there are no plans to add a Shopping feature to YouTube Indonesia. Although, the e-commerce function on YouTube is already available in various countries.
“For now, YouTube has no plans to add shopping features. From the Ministry of Trade’s perspective, because this (regulation) is only at the end of October, so it’s quite new,” said Randy to the media at the Google Indonesia Office, Jakarta, Tuesday (7/ 11/2023).
Randy said that his party was still analyzing the Minister of Trade Regulation (Permendag) Number 31 of 2023 concerning Business Licensing, Advertising, Guidance and Supervision of Business Actors in Trading Through Electronic Systems.
“So to be honest, we are still analyzing the detailed (rules) and so on,” he explained.
Previously, report Reuters said TikTok and YouTube would follow Meta’s steps (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) to register an e-commerce license in Indonesia. This follows the closure of the TikTok Shop online buying and selling feature in Indonesia last September.
Jokowi’s government itself has prohibited social media platforms from playing a dual role as e-commerce, according to the provisions of Minister of Trade Regulation 31 of 2023.
These regulations were created to protect local MSMEs, create a fair competition climate for all marketplaces, and protect user data.
Reuters reported TikTok plans to apply for an e-commerce license in Indonesia and is exploring the best mechanisms to restart its business.
This information was revealed by three inside sources who are familiar with ByteDance’s subsidiary plans.
Apart from TikTok, YouTube is also said to be planning to register an e-commerce license, according to two inside sources. For information, YouTube in the United States (US) accommodates shopping services, where creators can promote products and brands on their channels.
Previously, in October Meta had registered an e-commerce license in Indonesia. The license will allow Meta to promote products on its platform, but not conduct transactions.
This was revealed by the Director General of Domestic Trade, Isy Karim. However, Meta did not respond to requests for confirmation.
