Jokowi’s Promise: Help Rohingya Refugees Who Entered Aceh News – 1 hour ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, said that the Indonesian government would provide assistance to Rohingya refugees, although prioritizing the interests of local communities.

“Temporary humanitarian assistance to refugees will be provided by prioritizing the interests of local communities,” said Jokowi in a short video released by the Presidential Secretariat, Friday (8/12/2023).

Apart from that, the government will also take firm action against the Crime of Human Trafficking (TPPO) in the influx of Rohingya refugees into Indonesia. He will continue to coordinate with international organizations to overcome this.

“I received reports about Rohingya refugees increasingly entering Indonesian territory, especially Aceh province. There are strong suspicions that the TPPO network is involved in this flow of refugees,” said Jokowi.

As is known, Aceh residents rejected 1,487 Rohingya refugees. This refusal was based on the refugees not maintaining cleanliness, so that the area no longer had shelter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Indonesia legally has no obligation to accommodate refugees. Indonesia’s policy in accommodating refugees is often misused.
