Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) gave a warning about climate change which threatens 14% of the world’s population. Jokowi said the United Nations (UN) said the conditions that occurred were global boiling.
According to him, if the earth’s temperature continues to rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius, it is predicted that it will be the ‘doomsday’ for 210 million people who will experience water shortages, including being exposed to heat waves.
“14% of the population will be exposed to heat waves, and 290 million houses will be submerged in coastal floods and 600 million people will experience malnutrition due to crop failure and this is a real threat for us,” said Jokowi, when inaugurating the Opening of the 2023 World Hydropower Congress, in Bali , quoted Saturday (4/11/2023).
So currently Indonesia is committed to accelerating the energy transition through the addition of large-scale New Renewable Energy (EBT) plants.
Based on calculations, the potential in Indonesia could reach 3,600 GW from solar energy, wind, geothermal energy, ocean currents or waves, bioenergy and river currents.
“Hydro potential, Indonesia has more than 4,400 potential rivers and 128 of them are large rivers,” said Jokowi.
Such as the Mamberamo River (Papua), Kayan River (North Kalimantan) which has a potential of 13 thousand Megawatts.
“This is in North Kalimantan which will later be used as a source of electricity for the green industrial park in Kalimantan. Once again, this is a huge potential that we can exploit for the future of the earth and the future of the next generation,” said Jokowi.

Despite facing challenges such as the location of the hydroelectric power plant source which is far from the center of electricity demand. Apart from that, there is also a funding problem because it requires large investments, including technology transfer.
For this reason, Indonesia has created a blueprint to connect green electricity from generators to centers of economic growth, and continues to try to collaborate with the power of living ecosystems in the world.
