Learn from Finnish People, These 3 Things You Must Avoid to Be Happy

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Finland is known as the happiest place in the world. In fact, it has always been in first place for six consecutive years in the World Happiness Report.

It turns out that to be happy, Finnish people have their own tips. They will avoid some negative things in their life.

Finnish philosopher and psychologist, Frank Martela, revealed three things that people in that country never do. Here’s the summary:

1. Comparing Yourself with Others

Do you still often compare yourself with other people? It’s better to reduce this habit. Finnish society is also said to avoid this behavior.

Martela said they never showed off their wealth to other people. Apart from that, Finnish citizens behave simply.

The saying “Kell’ onni on, se onnen kätkeköön,” which means “Do not compare or boast about your happiness” is also firmly held by Finns. They adhere to the principle of focusing on things that make them happy and not showing off their success.

2. Ignoring Nature

Most Finnish people like nature. They use their four-week summer vacation to travel to the countryside or be one with nature.

For them, being in nature improves survival and well-being. Apart from that, it can also improve the self-development process.

Finnish people also see nature as playing an important role for humans. In the 2021 Sitra survey, 87% of people thought that nature would provide peace of mind, energy and relaxation.

3. Taking other people’s rights

Do you often get stories or experience a wallet that is lost and never returned? You will most likely never experience this incident in Finland.

This experiment was carried out by Reader’s Digest in 2022. They dropped 192 wallets in 16 cities around the world. The result is that 11 of the 12 wallets that fell in Helsinki, Finland, will be returned to their owners.

Martela said Finnish people tend to be trusting and value honesty. They will return items left in public places and will not take items left behind.

Finland’s state security can also be seen when children are active. They can use the public bus when they get home from school and play outdoors without adult supervision.
