Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The King of Malaysia is officially replaced. Now the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, will become the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

This was announced Friday (27/10/2023) afternoon local time. Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah The late Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah will also be appointed Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“Sultan Ibrahim has been elected as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year reign starting January 31 2024,” said the kingdom after the “Rulers’ Conference” at the State Palace, quoted from The Star Malaysia.

“Sultan Nazrin will serve as Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong during the same period,” the report added.

Previously, the Sultans of Malaysia met Friday morning. This was done to replace the previous head of state, King Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

King Abdulah Ahmad Shah, who came from the Sultanate of Pahang, only ascended the throne in 2019. Kendiri Malaysia has a unique monarchy system in Malaysia, where they implement a rotating system for Malay sultans in nine states to become king.

This system began when Malaysia gained independence from England in 1957. It is explained how the old ruling dynasties tried to maintain their status and power.

“The king will take precedence over everyone in the federation. His powers are broader than those of each sultan,” writes the Malaysian constitution.

“This includes having sole discretion to appoint the prime minister (PM) and reject requests for the dissolution of parliament.”

The king also had the power to pardon those who were punished. In 2018, King Abdulah Ahmad Shah’s predecessor, Sultan Muhammad V, pardoned Anwar, who was then imprisoned on sodomy and corruption charges he said were politically motivated.

In contrast to other traditional Malaysian rulers, Malaysia’s new King Sultan Ibrahim is known to be outspoken about politics. He has good relations with PM Anwar Ibrahim.

He is known for various business ventures, with shares in several large companies. Including private companies that have a joint venture with the Forest City project owned by Chinese property developer, Country Garden.
