Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MenKP) Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said that the export value of Indonesian ornamental fish had succeeded in overtaking Singapore and the Netherlands. Currently, the export value of Indonesian ornamental fish is the second largest in the world after Japan, followed by Singapore and the Netherlands.
Sakti quoted International Trade Statistics data, the export value of Indonesian ornamental fish in 2022 will reach US$ 36.4 million or 11.3% of the total world ornamental fish exports which reached US$ 321 million.
“The value is small compared to the total seafood eaten, but it is consistent,” said Trenggono when opening the Indonesian Ornamental Fish Festival at Ecowalk Mall Jakarta, Friday (27/10/2023).
The total world ornamental fish market value, he continued, which includes the domestic markets of each country and between countries, is estimated to reach US$ 6.27 billion in 2022 and will grow with a Compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.25% in 2022-2023, bringing it to US$ 16.63 billion in 2032.
The achievement of the export value of ornamental fish, said Trenggono, has made Indonesia the second largest exporter of ornamental fish in the world, shifting the position of Singapore and the Netherlands.
On the other hand, Trenggono also admitted that he was confused about Singapore, which had occupied the second position in the world’s largest ornamental fish exports. The reason, according to him, is that Singapore is a small country that does not have a sea.
“It’s strange, Singapore, a small country, doesn’t have a sea, the sea is so crowded, but the ornamental fish are quite big. The ornamental fish come from us, he walks there himself,” he said.

Meanwhile, he continued, in first place the country with the largest ornamental fish export value is still held by Japan, with a value of US$ 48.95 million or 15.3% of total world exports.
“Positive information in semester 1 of 2023 where the export value of Indonesian ornamental fish reached US$ 20.5 million or an increase of 16.2% compared to the same period in 2022,” explained Trenggono.
This, he said, was inversely proportional to Indonesia’s competitor countries such as Japan, Singapore and the Netherlands, each of which experienced a decline of 8.3%, 9.8% and 37.2%.
“Even though currently Indonesia is still ranked second in the world, this positive achievement convinces us all that in the future Indonesia will be able to become the largest exporter of ornamental fish in the world. Because we have been given the gift of a wealth of various types of endemic ornamental fish that are extraordinary in value high economics,” he said.
Trenggono said that the ornamental fish endemic to Indonesia that will become champions include the Super Red Arowana, Super Gold Arowana, Super Silver Arowana, Jardini Arowana and Botia.
“Therefore, the sustainability of the ornamental fish business must continue to be maintained through various policies, such as germplasm protection, rights to geographical indications, and other supporting policies,” said Trenggono.
“This ornamental fish business has also encouraged follow-up or supporting businesses, such as aquatic plants, aquaspace, live coral, aquariums and their facilities, as well as ornamental fish feed and others which are considered to have huge market potential and provide a multiplier effect on other business sectors. ,” he added.
