Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Batam is projected to be the center of growth for the data center industry in the Southeast Asia region. PT Telkom Indonesia (Telkom) through its subsidiary PT Telkom Data Ekosistem (NeutraDC) plans to build a hyperscale data center in Kabil Integrated Industrial Estate (KIIE) Batam.
The facility has an ultimate capacity of 51 MW IT load (initial phase 17 MW) with a green data center concept, for Batam and Singapore.
President Director of PT Teknologi Data Infrastruktur (NeutraDC Batam), Indrama YM Purba, said that one of the important points in developing the data center industry is paying attention to the importance of reliable infrastructure and supportive investment policies.
“Batam offers a unique opportunity with its strategic position because it is close to global financial centers such as Singapore and other neighboring countries. Apart from that, Batam, especially in Kabil, has geographical conditions that are safe from earthquakes, making it an ideal location for building data center facilities,” said Indrama, quoted from a press statement, Monday (13/11/2023).
According to Indrama, NeutraDC’s decision to build a data center in Batam was due to the great potential offered by this market.
“We are very enthusiastic to announce NeutraDC’s involvement in developing the data center industry in Batam. This decision is based on an in-depth analysis of the market and its impressive potential in Batam,” he said.
“We believe that collaboration with local stakeholders will bring positive benefits to all parties involved,” he added.
The data center industrial market in Batam is increasingly promising. According to the latest research conducted by industry experts, Batam offers great opportunities for data center companies looking to expand their operations in the Southeast Asia region.
Currently, the digital world is developing rapidly. For this reason, quality digital ecosystem facilities are needed to support e-commerce, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), etc. In the next few years, demand for data centers is expected to grow significantly.
The Batam Hyperscale Data Center (HDC) will be built on an area of around 5 Ha with a total of 3 global standard campuses. In the initial development phase, it will start with an IT load of around 5 MW in 2025 and will continue to increase according to needs.
HDC Batam will not only serve various domestic business needs, but Batam will become one of the entry points for hyperscalers to Indonesia.
In building a data center in Batam, NeutraDC collaborated with a Singapore telecommunications company, ST Dynamo ID Pte Ltd (a Singtel affiliate), and an energy company, PT Medco Power Indonesia. This collaboration is a strong collaboration and is in line with its role in building data centers.
The existence of a data center in Batam will later complement NeutraDC’s digital ecosystem. Currently, NeutraDC has three enterprise-scale data centers in Sentul, Serpong and Surabaya with tier III and IV classifications. Apart from that, there is also a hyperscale data center in Cikarang with tier III and IV classifications.
