The Exciting Sukabumi Earthquake Was the Beginning of Mount Salak’s Eruption, This is What Tech Experts Say – 4 hours ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Experts have opened their voices regarding the many rumors that the M 4.6 earthquake in Sukabumi on Thursday (14/12/2023) was linked to the tectonic activity of Mount Salak. The news spread quickly among netizens.

Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) Hendra Gunawan denied this issue. He emphasized that there was no connection between the earthquake and the tectonic activity of Mount Salak.

“There isn’t any [kaitannya]”Until now, the Mount Salak post has not recorded any volcanic earthquakes,” said Hendra, to CNN Indonesiaquoted Friday (15/12/2023).

Several days ago, Hendra also revealed that there was no increase in volcanic activity on Mount Salak. The status is also still normal or level 1.

Volcanic activity had indeed increased after the M 4.0 earthquake in the southwest of Bogor City in the early hours of Friday (8/12/2023). At that time, the earthquake caused a local tectonic earthquake which resulted in an increase of more than four earthquakes per day during December 6-8 2023.

PVMBG records show there were eight local earthquakes on December 6 2023, then seven the next day, and seven more earthquakes on December 8 2023. PVMBG also reported that distant tectonic earthquakes dominated Mount Salak 31 times and 22 local tectonic earthquakes during 1-9 December 2023.

Seismicity is reported to tend to be normal. Even so, PVMBG appealed to the public to remain alert to the potential for eruptions on Mount Salah.

“In the rainy season, the humidity level in the air around the crater will be higher, so that volcanic gases will be difficult to decompose, which will cause the concentration of the gases to increase and can endanger life,” he explained.
