US Company Wants to Build Nuclear Power Plant in RI, This Says ESDM News – 33 minutes ago

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has opened its voice regarding the plans of a company from the US, namely PT ThorCon Power Indonesia, which will have the first Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) in Indonesia by 2030.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Dadan Kusdiana said that until now Thorcon itself had not actually applied for a permit regarding the construction of the nuclear power plant.

“As long as I’ve been at the Directorate General of EBTKE, I haven’t conveyed this in this way, isn’t it? It’s different to submit a permit than to submit a plan,” said Dadan when met at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Building, Monday (23/10/2023).

Dadan believes that it is fine for Thorcon to have plans to build a nuclear power plant in Indonesia. However, this must of course go through the licensing process and applicable regulations at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

“If it’s a plan, anyone can talk, they can talk. Once the permit is in, it’s a different process, there are requirements that have to be met, there’s a timeline, there’s something we’ll confirm. If that’s not the case,” added Dadan.

Previously, PT ThorCon Power Indonesia admitted that it was preparing to build the first Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN) in Indonesia which is targeted to start operating in 2030.

Chief Operating Officer ThorCon, Bob S. Effendi revealed that in November 2024, his party will start the first steel cutting which will be carried out at a South Korean shipyard.

After that, Bob targets that in 2027, the nuclear power plant unit will arrive in Indonesia. The location chosen was in the Bangka Belitung Islands. Apart from that, the operational permit for the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency (Bapeten) is targeted for 2029.

“Commercial operations target 2030, First steel cutting (First steel cutter) at the shipyard in South Korea, November 2024, the nuclear power plant unit will arrive in 2027, Bapeten’s operational permit target is 2029,” he explained to CNBC Indonesia when contacted, Monday (23/10/2023).

He revealed that the targeted timeline for the process of building a domestic nuclear power plant is still being discussed further with Bapeten.

Bob explained that in the future the nuclear power plant, which is predicted to be the first nuclear power plant candidate in Indonesia, will have a capacity of 500 Mega Watt (MW).
