Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – YouTube has launched various efforts so that free users do not skip advertisements on its platform.
The video sharing service installed a pop-up that warned users not to install ad blocking services. Users of X (formerly Twitter) and other social media sites, complained about the new pop-up.
A screenshot of the pop-up states that users who install ad blockers on YouTube have violated the rules.
Furthermore, YouTube also informs users that their videos will be blocked, until they remove the ad blocker.
“Never disable your AdBlocker and allow YouTube to run ads for your account,” wrote someone on X, quoted from InsiderMonday (16/10/2023).
“If you show Google that you are willing to give up your AdBlocker for YouTube, they will make this new AdBlock ban permanent,” the notice added.
The pop-up message also encourages users to sign up for YouTube Premium, an ad-free version of the site that costs US$13.99 per month.
A YouTube spokesperson told Insider that the company has launched a global effort to urge viewers who have ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience.
YouTube first began testing the feature on its website in June, the company said The Verge at the time.
In a statement, YouTube told Insider that the use of ad blockers violates the website’s terms of service.
“Ads support a diverse ecosystem of content creators globally and enable billions of people to access their favorite content on YouTube,” the statement said.
According to The Vergesome viewers got a notification saying their video playback would stop after watching more than three videos with the ad blocker enabled.
Oluwa Falodun, a spokesperson for Google, which owns YouTube, told the outlet that detection of ad blockers is nothing new and that other sites regularly ask users to disable blockers.
“We take disabling playback very seriously, and will only disable playback if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube. If viewers feel they have been wrongly flagged for using an ad blocker, they can share this feedback by clicking a link in an instant,” Falodun told The Verge.
